Rat Runt (babies)

Sunday morning, Em came rushing in to my room and started shaking my foot.. wake up! come quick! I was soooo tired, having slept so poorly the night before.. Why? I asked…

There’s babies!

Just the night before we had something get into a bag of trash that was on our back porch.. so my first thought is babies.. raccoon babies? on our porch? what in the world!? I woke up enough to ask what *kind* of babies…

Rat babies! Otis (momma) and Geraldo had babies!

5 plump little rattlets.. er.. pups.. er kittens.. or well, babies.

Quickly had to separate the momma and babies from the daddy.. and now Em will need to get another sizeable cage to be able to home females in one and males in another.. In about 3 weeks, we’ll have to separate the sexes with the babies.. so early!

Rats, btw, make the sweetest of little critter pets. My kids ask for a hamster, I say “get a rat”.. how about a guinea pig.. “get a rat”… a chinchilla? .. “get a rat”… (though I did not win that argument when it came to Olivia Hedgehog.

Awww.. they look so cute. We have a mouse (my husband found her at work) but I can’t see myself ever saying ok to a rat.

Jenny.. I live in a little zoo, lol.. really the only others are the 3 dogs and the fish.. oh and the cat. Used to have… oh.. I won’t even go there. Honestly, I’d get a rat over the hedgie.. must easier to handle and play with.

Monique… I wouldn’t want a mouse.. too tiny for me. But I know lots of rat people are mouse people too. :)

I just don’t like the tails, they really freak me out…but I want to be happy for you I really do :) I like your hedgehog though – I’ve never experienced a lick from a hedgehog before :)

Awe!! They are so cute, I remember when my hamster had babies. My daughter now has a hamster the thing look pregnant, I always wondered about rats. Hamsters are so stupid, are rats able to connect with people?

How sweet! Rats can and do make great pets…pet rats that is, not just any ol’ rat you find somewhere! When I was in college, I had a rat that I used for my Psych lab (Skinner box experiment where the rat learns to click a bar for food) and I kept him for years afterwards. His name was Barney and he was a sweetie :)

I’ll play with the baby rats here at the hospital and I’m all OVER any mouse that shows up but full grown rats turn me off. Those are cute ones.

Judi February 12, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Kristin – yes, pet rats do connect with people.. they are very social with their owners and with friends.. they love people.. and they are very smart. Momma Otis even knows her name. When you call her name, she’ll stop what she’s doing and look at you. :)

Very cute! Now I want rats again! If you check out my blog, I have links to some articles I’ve written about the joy of pet rats. At one point I had 10. But I don’t have room now, or I’d be getting some now.

They are really the sweetest things. And getting licked by a rat is the best. One day I’ll see what a hedgehog is like.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures!

Now you need a ferret! (just kidding, you really shouldn’t have one with a rat, or hedgehog I imagine)

I think those are very cute! I have my own pets, too. They are Jumping Beans. I do not think my beans are as cute as your baby rats.

I had two pet rats, Ozzy and Templeton, for almost 3 years until I had to have them put to sleep. They were the best pets I had ever had-they’re like mini dogs only they don’t bark.
