Olivia Hedgehog - self-anointing

I’ve been making soap and my hands smell nice and yummy… Olivia came out to play and had fun licking my hand.
One of the funny things hedgehogs do is a sort of contorting and twisting, foaming at the mouth and licking their quills.. called “self-anointing”.
This is usually triggered by a new, unusual smell in their home or on their handler.
Olivia must have liked the yuzu scent on my hands… Oh.. take note of her dirty little piggies… how she manages to get that dirty, that quickly boggles my mind.. but it’s definitely time for a bath!

Aw, she is just totally adorable, but how on earth do you come to have a pet hedgehog, and such a cutie-pie? I’ve never seen one that looks quite like Olivia. Is she a baby or fully grown, and is she a regular hog or some exotic breed? (BTW my boss at work is called Olivia, too! heh heh)

What’s it like to have a pet hedgehog? I have always thought they were very cute. Do you get get it at the pet store? It looks very tame. Is there worry about the quills and stuff?
Oh soooo cute!
If only we could have pet hedgehogs in Australia!

Olivia is a Peach Hedgie.. her coloring is a creamy color - not something you typically see, but not unusual if you seek out breeders.
She’s 1 year old, so fully grown.. she was a tiny baby and the breeder figured she’d always be pretty small.
She’s very tame, but the quills are very prickley… She doesn’t see very far distance, but she does enjoy Sky (our Aussie) getting up to her cage and watching her.
She does this thing called “huffing”.. all her quills stick up and cross over, creating a protective barrier.. she’ll make these huffing noises to scare off predators.. like my hand trying to clean her cage.. once she recognizes the smell, or the person, she’s all sweetness.. only takes a few seconds. I should video it.
She is adorable!

I am now totally fascinated with these lil beasties and have just been reading about African Pygmy hogs… aw! Thanks so much for introducing me to these adorable creatures. By the way, what’s an Aussie called Sky?
All the best to you and Olivia;-D

Olivia could grace the pages of CuteOverload.com — what an adorable pic of her dainty self. I’ve never seen a hedgehog more relaxed. :o)
