In all the technology issues I have endured with my Toshiba laptop, I’ve finally moved past Microsoft and on to web based programs. Some changes were already there, but some were reluctant changes for me. Having done it all, finally, I’m thrilled! I am able to access everything from any computer. I didn’t want alternatives to Outlook… now I’m glad I found some!
Mail – I now use Gmail. By invitation only. But invitations are easy to come by; just ask a friend who has gmail to send you an invite. Using Gmail, I’m able to have all my mail sent there. I am able to add labels to sort and easily train gmail to recognize mail I consider trash. Works for me!
Calendar – This was a sort issue with me. I lost my Outlook Calendar a couple times and then other times was without it, as my computer was being repaired (using that term loosely). Came across a great web based calendar with Trumba. Multiple calendars, multiple layouts, share it, email it, publish it or not. Love it!
Pictures – This summer, I lost all my photos from the summer. Days at the races, the kids… all of it. Can’t say it enough – backup those important files! Recently, I was introduced to two different programs that I like for separate reasons. Flickr is a beta photo program. I use it to store many images, organize and display them on my personal website (Momma Muse). It’s easy to use. The other program I like is Sony’s ImageStation. It easily allows you to upload all your images, categorize them and create awesome gifts to send to family and friends.
Websites – First, I bought FrontPage – then I discovered WordPress blog/content manager. All web based, easy to use Dashboard. Easily edited themes. Now it’s easy to word on all my web work via any computer at any time. Now I just need to upgrade all my sites to wordpress.
Banking – I did this several years ago, made sure the bank we use has online capabilities – it does (I think almost all do now). I am able to check our account from any computer. For security purposes, it automatically logs out after so many minutes or offers the option to continue working.
Bills – I am able to pay almost all our bills online; mortgage, cell phones, credit cards, car payments. Just a couple of utilites haven’t taken the plunge, so they get a pretty paper check from us. (come on guys! get updated! grasp technology and go with it!)
