I am ready to put up the udders. 19 mos of nursing this time around and I’m ready to start the process of stopping. I’m ready to start weaning. Breastfeeding a toddler is much different (feeling) than nursing a baby. Those who tandem nurse, who breastfeed past toddler-hood… I commend you. I have no desire to do it, but I am impressed with those who do.

We spent a much sleepless night last night with me rocking, cooing, and rubbing Ry’s head…”ssshhh, it’s ok.. time to go ni-night… time to sleep… ” with him tossing, turning, crying and fighting. It was hard. On me, on him. Heck, even Bob and Tege were awake and listening, helpless.

No one knows who to feel more sorry for; me, for all the nursings, night wakes, this-side-now-that-side moments of each day, or for Ry, who’s had nursing (nummy, we call it) from his first minutes of life.

Habits are hard to break; weaning has become a partial habit for us. I’m not trying to break this altogether, but damn if I don’t want the option of sleeping the night through without an attached being.

We are still an “attached” family. We practice attachment parenting with our little ones (we still co-sleep, used slings when they were much smaller). Then move to a more instinctual parenting. We do what feels best for us and each child. Works for us. Weaning though… oh boy.

I am working through this process with my 18 m.o., my first. I’ll think of you the next time I’m up with my crying toddler who doesn’t understand why he can’t have his favorite thing but who also bites said thing if given the opportunity.
